The Companion Group Bikes to Work!

Berkeley citizens are known for being both health and eco-conscious, and it’s never more apparent than on Bike To Work Day! Bike lanes, usually already populated by men, women, and children pedaling away, became even busier this past May 14th. Some of The Companion Group’s own were there too, hitting the streets on two wheels!

The Companion Group has a few regular cyclists who choose bikes as their primary mode of transportation. Those lucky enough to live within biking distance of our office take advantage of Berkeley’s flat streets, and our office’s friendly and helpful cyclist contingent, who are always ready to lend a hand… or wrench… or air pump!

Regular cyclist and Junior Industrial Designer Bennett Gershkow said, “Riding my bike through the fresh air beats sitting in traffic any day of the week. Plus, helping the environment doesn’t hurt either.”

For others, Bike to Work Day called for a special effort. After all, it’s not always easy to put in the physical work required, or to brave the elements. But in the spirit of the day, our co-workers strapped on their helmets and hopped on their seats. “I chose to ride my bike in support of Bike To Work Day. I do ride my bike on occasion, not as much as I’d like but sometimes, and will continue to as schedules allow. Riding to work is sometimes an effort due to the morning chill and fog but the ride home is always relaxing… It allows me to unwind from my busy day. And get some exercise!” said Sales Manager Bobbi Pauline.

There was an extra reward for those who participated: not only did IT Director Carl Porter get a free tote bag and energy bars when he and his bike got off at the BART station, but Key Accounts Manager Sarah Farrar passed out Philz Coffee gift cards to those in our office who participated! A member of The Companion Group’s newly-formed Employee Engagement Committee (aka the “Fun Committee”), Sarah represented an organized effort in our office to encourage fun, beneficial activities for employees.

Along with Bike to Work Day, The Companion Group has plans for more group outings designed to reward our employees for their hard work, and to encourage bonds that make office life even better. We’ll keep you posted on some of our upcoming adventures!
