Grillin’ Spuds: Your Guide to Potatoes on the Grill
Potatoes make a great side dish for nearly any dinner menu. Along with being cheap, filling, and relatively easy to cook, potatoes are also a pretty versatile vegetable. Potato side dishes come in a wide array of flavors, textures, and styles which makes them hard to get tired of. One of my personal favorite ways to cook potatoes is of course on the grill. Grilling potatoes picks up a wonderfully smoky flavor that they just don’t get from most other cooking methods. Today we’re going to show you a few tools and techniques for the perfect grilled potato.
The Grill-Baked Potato
Next to mashed potatoes, the baked potato is perhaps one of the most classic ways to prepare a spud. They make a great side dish because they’re easy to cook and go well with a variety of toppings like bacon, sour cream, cheese, chives, and butter. Putting baked potatoes on the menu for dinner is a great way to give people the option of customizing their own side dish by picking their favorite toppings for garnishing.
Of course there’s also the age-old technique of wrapping the potato in aluminum foil and grilling it over indirect heat, but with advances in the realm of grill-gadgetry there a few tools that can speed up the process.
Potato People
The first of these tools would be our Charcoal Companion Potato People. These fun little tools not only help to speed up the cooking process by conducting extra heat to the center of the potato, but they also look pretty cool in the process. This set comes with four different potato people: a fireman, pirate, chef, and a cowboy, making it the perfect kit to entertain the kids. Enlist the help of your little ones by having them build their own potato people before the spuds head to the grill!
Potato Grilling Rack
If you’re looking for a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to grilling your potatoes, the Charcoal Companion potato grilling rack is the perfect tool for the job. This product works similarly to the potato people by conducting extra heat to the interior of the vegetable. Cooking times are reduced by up to 15 to 20 minutes by using this rack, and when the spuds are finished you can simply remove the rack and bring it right to the dinner table to serve.
Flame Friendly Grill Wok
A part of the Flame Friendly ceramic line of product, this grill wok is perfect for a making a batch of grill roasted potatoes. Roasting potatoes on the grill couldn’t get any easier than this; simply cut your potatoes into even-sized cubes, season with spices and salt, then toss them in a little olive oil. Place the potatoes in your preheated grill wok and roast them over low flame for 25-30 minutes until browned and tender. Chances are you’ll be surprised just how tasty something so simple can be.
Whether it’s a sweet potato, some red potatoes, or just a plain old russet, grilled potatoes of any kind are the perfect way to round out your barbecue dinner.
